Whiskey Point Surf Guide: The Perfect Beginner Wave in Arugam Bay

Just a short 15-minute tuk-tuk ride north of the bustling center of Arugam Bay lies one of the most beloved surf spots on the entire East Coast of Sri Lanka: Whiskey Point.
Whether you are a total beginner catching your first green wave, or an experienced longboarder looking for a buttery, endlessly peeling right-hander, Whiskey Point delivers. Here is everything you need to know about surfing this iconic spot.
What Makes Whiskey Point So Special?
While Main Point in Arugam Bay is famous for its fast, barreling sections suited for advanced surfers, Whiskey Point is the complete opposite.
The wave breaks off a rocky outcrop and spills into a beautiful, deep, sandy bay. Because the wave reforms as it wraps around the point, it creates a thick, slow, and incredibly forgiving wall of water.
Key features of Whiskey Point:
- Wave Type: Right-hand point break.
- Bottom: Sand and flat reef (very safe).
- Ideal Level: Absolute Beginners to Intermediates.
- Best Board: Longboards, Mini-Mals, and high-volume soft tops.
The Best Time to Surf Whiskey Point
Like the rest of Arugam Bay, the prime surf season at Whiskey Point runs from May to September. During these months, the wind blows offshore in the morning, making the wave perfectly glassy and smooth.
If you are a beginner, the early morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) is the absolute best time to go. The wind is low, the water is warm, and the vibe in the lineup is friendly and encouraging. It does get crowded during peak season (July & August), which is why surfing with a local instructor is highly recommended to help you navigate the lineup safely.
Why Beginners Love It
Most beginners worry they’ll fail in their first surf lesson or that the waves will be too intimidating. Whiskey Point completely removes this fear.
The takeoff zone is clearly defined next to the rocks, and the wave slopes gently rather than jacking up and throwing a steep lip. This gives beginners plenty of time to paddle, pop up, and find their balance before the wave actually breaks.
