Your First Surf Lesson in Arugam Bay: Exactly What to Expect

beginner surfer arugam bay, first surf lesson sri lanka

Booking your very first surf lesson is incredibly exciting, but it is totally normal to feel a little bit nervous! If you have never touched a surfboard before, you probably have dozens of questions: Is it dangerous? Do I need to be a strong swimmer? What if I can't stand up?

At Edgeway Surf, we have taught thousands of complete beginners how to ride the waves of Arugam Bay. We want to remove all the anxiety so you can focus purely on having fun.

Here is exactly what you can expect during your first 90-minute surf lesson with us.

1. The Setup & Transport

Your lesson starts at the Edgeway Surf center in town. You will meet your ISA-certified instructor, and we will size you up for the perfect beginner "soft-top" foam board (these are highly buoyant and very safe).

We will also provide you with a high-quality, UV-protective rash guard so you don't get sunburned. From there, we strap the boards to the roof of our tuk-tuk and take a scenic 10-minute drive to a beginner-friendly, sandy-bottom spot like Peanut Farm or Whiskey Point.

2. Dry Land Theory (20 Minutes)

We never throw you straight into the ocean. Your first lesson begins on the dry sand. Your coach will walk you through the absolute essentials:

  • Ocean Safety: How to fall safely (always cover your head!), how to handle your board in the water, and how to read the currents.
  • The Paddling Technique: Where to position your chest on the board so you don't nose-dive.
  • The "Pop-Up": This is the biomechanics of going from lying down to standing up. We will practice this movement repeatedly on the sand until your muscle memory takes over.

3. Entering the Water

It's time to get wet! You will paddle out into waist-deep water. Because we teach at sandy-bottom breaks, you can literally stand up on the ocean floor—there is no deep-water treading required on day one.

Your instructor will be standing right beside you in the water. They will hold your board steady, point you toward the beach, and tell you exactly when a wave is coming.

4. Catching Your First Wave (White-Water)

On your first day, we focus exclusively on "white-water" waves (the bubbly, broken foam that pushes you gently toward the shore).

When a white-water wave approaches, your instructor will give your board a strong push to match the speed of the wave. You will hear them shout: "PADDLE, PADDLE, PADDLE... POP UP!"

That is your cue to execute the pop-up you practiced on the sand. Don't worry if you fall on your first few attempts—everybody does! Falling into the warm tropical water is half the fun.

5. Riding and Refining

Once you successfully stand up and ride your first wave to the beach, you will be hooked! For the rest of the lesson, your instructor will provide constant micro-adjustments. They will correct your stance, remind you to keep your knees bent, and tell you to look straight ahead at the beach (not down at your feet!).

By the end of your 90-minute session, the vast majority of our students are comfortably standing up and riding waves independently.

What Should You Bring?

We provide all the heavy equipment. All you need to bring is:

  • A snug-fitting swimsuit or boardshorts (avoid loose bikinis that might fall off in the waves!).
  • Heavy-duty water-resistant sunscreen (we highly recommend Zinc for your face).
  • A towel and a bottle of drinking water.
