Top 5 Mistakes Beginner Surfers Make (And How We Fix Them)

Learning to surf is one of the most rewarding challenges on the planet. However, if you try to teach yourself by simply renting a board and running into the ocean, you are going to develop terrible habits that will halt your progress for years.
At Edgeway Surf, our ISA-certified coaches have taught thousands of complete beginners how to ride the waves of Arugam Bay. Day after day, we see new students making the exact same five errors.
Here are the top 5 mistakes beginner surfers make, and exactly how our professional coaching team fixes them.
1. Nose-Diving (Also Known as "Pearling")
The Mistake: You paddle hard for a wave, you feel the momentum pick up, and suddenly the front of your surfboard plunges directly underwater, flipping you forward like a catapult. The Cause: You are lying too far forward on the surfboard, putting too much weight on the nose. The Fix: Every surfboard has a "sweet spot" for balancing. Our coaches will show you exactly where to position your chest so the board planes flat on the water. We use a simple rule: keep the nose of the board exactly one inch above the surface of the water while paddling.
2. Popping Up on Your Knees
The Mistake: When the wave catches you, instead of jumping straight to your feet, you pull your knees up and rest on them before slowly standing up. The Cause: Fear of falling, lack of core strength, or simply rushing the movement before the board is stable. The Fix: Standing up on your knees creates a terrible muscle memory habit that makes transitioning to smaller, faster boards impossible. In our Beginner Surf Lessons, we spend 20 minutes on the dry sand drilling the correct "Pop-Up" biomechanics. We teach you to push up like a cobra and swing your feet under your chest in one fluid motion, bypassing the knees entirely.
3. Looking Down at Your Feet
The Mistake: You successfully pop up to your feet, but immediately lose your balance and fall off the side of the board. The Cause: You are looking straight down at your feet or the nose of the surfboard to see if you are doing it right. The Fix: Surfing follows the rule of target fixation: Your body goes where your eyes look. If you look down at the water, you will fall into the water! Our coaches will constantly remind you to look up, keep your eyes focused on the beach, and point your leading arm toward the shoreline.
4. Paddling Too Late (or Stopping Too Early)
The Mistake: The wave simply rolls right under you, leaving you sitting out the back while the wave passes you by. The Cause: You either started paddling too late, or you felt the wave lift the tail of your board and you stopped paddling before the wave actually caught you. The Fix: You have to match the speed of the wave to catch it. During your first few lessons, your coach will be in the water with you. They will tell you exactly when to start paddling, and more importantly, they will give the tail of your board a firm push so you effortlessly match the wave's velocity.
5. Using the Wrong Surfboard
The Mistake: Trying to learn on a cool, sharp, 6-foot fiberglass shortboard because it "looks professional." The Cause: Ego! Shortboards have very little volume, meaning they sink easily, paddle slowly, and require expert balance. The Fix: We completely remove ego from the equation. All of our beginners start on 8-foot or 9-foot "soft-top" foam boards. These massive boards have immense volume, making them highly buoyant and incredibly stable. Once you master the foam board, then we can talk about sizing down!
