What to Pack for a Surf Camp in Sri Lanka

Packing for a tropical surf trip is an art form. You want to travel light enough to easily jump in the back of a Tuk Tuk, but you don't want to arrive missing critical surf gear that is hard to find on the island.
If you have just booked your immersive surf camp sri lanka experience, here is the ultimate local guide on exactly what to pack for Arugam Bay.
The Essentials: What You MUST Bring
- Zinc-Based Sunscreen: Regular chemical sunscreens will wash off the second you catch a wave, leaving you fried by the equatorial sun. Bring high-quality, thick zinc for your face, and a highly water-resistant reef-safe sunscreen for your body. (While you can buy sunscreen in Arugam Bay, imported brands are very expensive).
- Rash Guards / Surf Leggings: The water is 28°C (82°F) year-round. You do not need a wetsuit. However, the tropical sun combined with the friction of lying on a surfboard will tear up your stomach and back. Bring a UV-rated rash guard.
- Basic First Aid Kit: While our surf camp arugam bay has first aid on-hand, it is always wise to bring waterproof Band-Aids, antiseptic cream (like Betadine) for minor reef scrapes, and mosquito repellent.
- Adapter Plug: Sri Lanka primarily uses the Type D (three round pins) or Type G (UK style) sockets. Bring a universal adapter.
What You Should NOT Bring
- Your Entire Quiver of Surfboards: Unless you are a professional surfer riding a highly specific 24-liter shortboard, save your money on the massive airline baggage fees. When you book an Edgeway Surf lesson, top-quality sri lanka surfboard rental is included. We have huge foamies for beginners, and pristine performance boards for advanced riders.
- Warm Clothes: It is hot. Very hot. At night, the temperature rarely drops below 26°C (78°F). You do not need jeans, jackets, or heavy sweaters. Pack light, breathable linen or cotton.
- Wetsuits or Booties: Leave the neoprene at home. The water is akin to a warm bath.
Life at the Camp
When staying at a true pure surf camp sri lanka, the vibe is incredibly kicked-back and bohemian. You will spend 90% of your time barefoot or in sandals, wearing boardshorts or bikinis.
Pack light, bring good zinc, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!
