Your First Surf Lesson in Arugam Bay: What to Expect Step by Step

So you have finally booked your surf lesson in Arugam Bay β congratulations! You are about to experience one of the most exhilarating moments of your entire trip to Sri Lanka. But if you have never surfed before, we completely understand the nerves.
Will I actually stand up? Is it safe? What do I even wear?
As the team at Edgeway Surf, we have guided hundreds of first-timers through their very first wave. Here is an honest, step-by-step breakdown of exactly what your first surf lesson in Arugam Bay looks like.
Step 1: Meeting Your Instructor (15 Minutes Before)
You will meet your ISA-certified surf instructor at our base in Arugam Bay. Our experienced local coaches will introduce themselves, ask about your fitness level, and assess the day's conditions.
What to bring: Just swimwear, sunscreen, and a towel. We provide everything else β surfboard, rash guard, and leash.
Step 2: Beach Theory & Pop-Up Practice (20 Minutes)
Before you touch the water, your instructor will teach you the fundamentals on the sand:
- Board positioning β where to lie on the surfboard for optimal balance
- The pop-up β the explosive movement from lying flat to standing. You will practice this 10-15 times until the muscle memory clicks
- Safety rules β how to fall safely, how to hold your board, and ocean awareness
This beach training is the secret weapon. Surf schools that skip this step have significantly lower success rates. At Edgeway Surf, we never rush this phase.
Step 3: Into the Water (60-90 Minutes)
Now the magic happens. Your instructor will take you to a beginner-friendly spot β typically Baby Point or Peanut Farm β where the waves are gentle, sandy-bottomed, and waist-deep.
Here is the beautiful truth: your instructor physically pushes you into the wave. You don't need to paddle hard or time the wave perfectly. They do the hard part. Your only job is to pop up and balance.
Most beginners stand up on their very first wave. By the end of the session, you will have caught 10-20 waves.
Step 4: The Debrief
After your session, your instructor will give you feedback on your technique and recommend next steps. Many of our students are so thrilled that they immediately book a private surf lesson or a full multi-day surf camp package.
How Much Does a First Surf Lesson Cost?
Our surf lesson prices start from just $17 per person for a group lesson, or $18 for a private lesson β one of the most affordable rates in all of Sri Lanka.
