The biggest mistake travelers make when booking a surf trip to Sri Lanka is going to the wrong coast at the wrong time of year. Sri Lanka experiences two separate monsoon seasons, meaning the surf is always pumping somewhere on the island.

If you are planning to visit the East Coast, the Arugam Bay surf season runs from May through October. During these mid-year months, the Indian Ocean delivers consistent swells, offshore winds, and endless sunshine to Arugam Bay, making it the surf capital of Asia.

To help you plan the perfect 2027 surf trip, we have created a completely fresh month-by-month breakdown of what to expect.

Early Season (April & May)

The Vibe: Quiet, peaceful, and glassy.
Wave Size: 2 to 4 feet.

April and May mark the transition from the rainy season to the dry season. The massive crowds haven't arrived yet, making this the absolute best time for beginners who want empty lineups. The famous right-hand point breaks (like Main Point and Peanut Farm) start to wake up, offering small but incredibly clean and glassy rides.

If you book a Beginner Surf Course during the early season, you will practically have the ocean to yourself.

Peak Season (June, July, & August)

The Vibe: Energetic, bustling, and consistent.
Wave Size: 3 to 6+ feet.

This is the golden window. From June through August, Arugam Bay turns into a surfer’s paradise. The Roaring Forties storm systems in the deep Southern Ocean send long-period swells perfectly into the East Coast bays.

For Advanced Surfers: Main Point is firing on all cylinders, offering steep take-offs and barrel sections.
For Beginners: Spots like Whiskey Point and Elephant Rock offer perfectly peeling waves that are shielded from the main brunt of the swell.

Because this is the height of the 2027 European summer holidays, the town is fully alive. Beach parties, packed cafes, and lively surf camps are the norm. Note: You must book your Surf Camp Packages well in advance for these months!

Late Season (September & October)

The Vibe: Laid-back, warm, and unpredictable.
Wave Size: 2 to 5 feet.

September is often considered the "sweet spot" by locals. The summer crowds have flown home, but the ocean is still delivering fantastic, highly surfable waves.

By late October, the winds start to shift as the Northeast monsoon approaches. You might experience a few afternoon rain showers, but the mornings are generally still glassy and beautiful. This is an excellent time for budget travelers to score end-of-season deals on accommodation.

When Does Arugam Bay Close? (November to March)

From November to March, the East Coast experiences heavy rains and onshore winds, ruining the surf conditions. Most businesses in Arugam Bay board up their windows, and the surfing community migrates to the South Coast (Weligama, Hikkaduwa, Midigama).

We do not recommend booking a surf trip to Arugam Bay between November and March.

What Wetsuit Do You Need?

None! The water temperature in Arugam Bay hovers around a bath-like 28°C (82°F) year-round. All you need is a good pair of boardshorts or a bikini.

However, the tropical sun is intense. We highly recommend wearing a UV-protective rash guard (which we provide for free during all our Edgeway Surf Lessons) and applying zinc sunscreen to your face.
