The Top 3 Best Beginner Surf Spots in Arugam Bay (2027 Guide)

Arugam Bay is famous around the world for its perfect, long-peeling right-hand point breaks. But if you are a complete beginner, the idea of paddling out into a crowded lineup can be incredibly intimidating.
The good news? Arugam Bay is one of the safest and most forgiving places in the world to learn how to surf. You just have to know exactly where to go.
If you paddle out at Main Point as a beginner, you will likely get frustrated (and in the way of advanced surfers). But if you head a few kilometers out of town, you will find perfectly gentle, sandy-bottom rollers.
Here are the top 3 best beginner surf spots in Arugam Bay for the 2027 season, heavily utilized by our ISA-certified coaches at Edgeway Surf.
1. Peanut Farm
Distance from Arugam Bay: 15-minute tuk-tuk ride South.
Bottom Type: Soft Sand.
Vibe: Relaxed, secluded, and beautiful.
Peanut Farm is the holy grail of beginner surfing in Sri Lanka. The spot is actually broken into two distinct waves. The "Main Point" at Peanut Farm is great for intermediate surfers, but the inside section (often called the "Baby Point") is a beginner's dream.
The wave rolls gently over a completely sandy bottom, meaning you don't have to worry about reef cuts if you fall off your board. Because the wave is relatively slow and breaks close to the shore, it is the absolute perfect place to practice your "pop-up" in waist-deep water.
Note: Peanut Farm is our #1 location for teaching day-one beginners during our Private & Group Surf Lessons.
2. Whiskey Point
Distance from Arugam Bay: 20-minute tuk-tuk ride North.
Bottom Type: Sand & Boulder.
Vibe: Energetic and fun (with a great beach bar).
Located just past the town of Pottuvil, Whiskey Point is another incredible wave for beginners and longboarders. The wave breaks off a rocky outcrop but crumbles softly over a sandy bottom toward the beach.
Whiskey Point is slightly more powerful than Peanut Farm, making it the perfect "step-up" wave once you have mastered the basics and want to practice riding "green" (unbroken) waves for a longer distance.
3. Elephant Rock
Distance from Arugam Bay: 20-minute tuk-tuk ride South (past Peanut Farm).
Bottom Type: Sand.
Vibe: Wild, adventurous, and scenic.
Getting to Elephant Rock is an adventure in itself. You take a tuk-tuk down a dusty jungle road, hike over some sand dunes, and arrive at a stunning, completely untouched bay.
The wave here is notoriously fickle—it requires a larger swell to wrap into the bay properly. However, when the conditions are right, the inside section of Elephant Rock offers extremely gentle, peeling waves perfect for beginners. Plus, climbing the rock at sunset after your surf session is a major highlight!
Where NOT to Surf as a Beginner
To keep yourself safe and respect the local surf etiquette, complete beginners should avoid:
- Main Point: The crown jewel of Arugam Bay. The wave is fast, steep, and breaks over a sharp reef. Leave this to the advanced surfers.
- Okanda: Located an hour south, this powerful wave is only suitable for experienced riders.
Learn Safely with the Locals
The best way to experience these spots without the stress of organizing transport or renting the right board is to book a structured lesson.
At Edgeway Surf, we monitor the tides and the wind every single morning. We know exactly which beginner spot will be working best, and we provide the tuk-tuk transport directly from our shop to the sand.
