What Size Surfboard Do Beginners Need in Sri Lanka?
When you arrive for your first Arugam Bay surf lesson, you might look at the sleek, pointy shortboards ridden by the local pros and think: "I want to ride one of those!"
However, trying to learn on a high-performance shortboard is like trying to learn to drive in a Formula 1 car. It is going to be incredibly frustrating, and you will likely give up before you even catch a wave.
If you want to progress quickly and actually have fun, you need the right equipment. Here is everything you need to know about beginner surfboard sizes.
The Rule of Thumb: Bigger is Better
For absolute beginners, volume and surface area are your best friends. The larger the board, the more buoyant and stable it is.
The Ideal Beginner Board: An 8-foot or 9-foot soft-top surfboard (often called a "foamie").
Why Soft-Tops?
- Safety: When you wipe out (and you will), a foam board is soft and forgiving. A hard fiberglass board can cause serious bruises or cuts.
- Paddling Power: Because they have so much foam (high volume), they glide through the water easily, allowing you to catch small, weak waves with minimal effort.
- Stability: A wide, long foamie provides a massive platform for your feet, making the "pop-up" (standing up) much more forgiving if your foot placement isn't perfect.
Board Size Based on Your Weight
While an 8-foot board is the standard, your height and weight play a role.
- Kids and Smaller Adults (Under 60kg): A 7-foot to 7'6" soft-top is usually perfect. It provides enough float without being too heavy to handle in the water.
- Average Adults (60kg - 85kg): An 8-foot soft-top is the gold standard.
- Taller or Heavier Adults (85kg+): A 9-foot soft-top is highly recommended to ensure you have enough buoyancy to paddle easily.
When Should You "Size Down"?
A common beginner mistake is rushing to a smaller board too soon. You should only consider transitioning to a smaller board (like a "minimal" or funboard) when you can consistently:
- Paddle out to the lineup.
- Catch unbroken "green" waves on your own without an instructor pushing you.
- Angle the board and ride down the open face of the wave.
At Edgeway Surf, our Surf Camps provide access to a massive quiver of premium beginner boards. As you improve throughout the week, your instructor will swap your board, allowing you to safely size down and progress at the perfect pace!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best surfboard for a beginner?
A soft-top foam longboard (typically 8 to 9 feet long) is the absolute best board for beginners. They are stable, highly buoyant, and very safe.
Can I learn to surf on a shortboard?
We strongly advise against it. Learning on a shortboard will severely delay your progress. Start big, master the basics, and gradually size down over time.
