Surf Camp Daily Schedule: What a Typical Day in Arugam Bay Looks Like

You have seen the photos of perfect waves and vibrant sunsets, but if you have never booked a Surf Camp in Arugam Bay, you might be wondering what the actual day-to-day rhythm feels like.

Is it an exhausting military-style bootcamp? Are you surfing 8 hours a day?

Not at all! Surfing on the East Coast of Sri Lanka operates on a beautiful, relaxed tropical schedule dictated entirely by the sun and the wind. Here is a glimpse into a typical day at Edgeway Surf Camp.

5:45 AM: The Dawn Patrol Wake-Up

Surfers are early risers. Why? Because the wind is perfectly still at dawn, creating flawless, glassy waves. You'll roll out of bed, grab a quick coffee and a banana, and meet your instructors. The air is warm, the village is quiet, and the anticipation is high.

6:15 AM: Tuk-Tuk to the Break

We load the soft-top surfboards onto the roof of a local tuk-tuk. Depending on the daily swell forecast, we might head a few minutes south to Peanut Farm or north to Whisky Point. The sunrise drive through the jungle, passing roaming elephants and peacocks, is an experience in itself.

6:30 AM – 8:00 AM: Surf Session 1

This is the main event. If you are a beginner, you will hit the water with your instructor for a 90-minute structured surf lesson. The water is 28°C (no wetsuit required!), the sun is just peeking over the horizon, and you will spend the session practicing your pop-ups and catching incredible rides.

8:30 AM: The Epic Sri Lankan Breakfast

Surfing burns a massive amount of calories. We head back to the camp for a giant, well-deserved breakfast. Think fresh tropical fruit platters, eggs, local coconut roti, dhal curry, and endless pots of Ceylon tea. This is where everyone shares stories of their best waves and funniest wipeouts from the morning.

10:00 AM – 3:30 PM: Free Time and Recovery

By 10:00 AM, the tropical sun is blazing, and the onshore winds usually start blowing, making the waves choppy. This is your downtime.

  • Take a nap in a hammock.
  • Go shopping along the main street of Arugam Bay.
  • Grab an iced coffee at a local cafe and get some remote work done.
  • Book a jeep for a midday Kumana National Park Safari.

4:00 PM: The Evening "Glass-Off" Surf

As the afternoon cools down, the winds drop, and the ocean cleans up again. We head back out for a relaxed, sunset surf session. The lighting is golden, the vibes in the lineup are incredibly chill, and you get to practice the skills you learned that morning.

7:00 PM: Dinner, Beers, and Good Vibes

After washing the salt off, the camp family heads out to one of Arugam Bay's amazing restaurants. Whether it is incredible local seafood, massive wood-fired pizzas, or Lion lagers on the beach, the evenings are all about community. By 10:00 PM, you will likely be exhausted in the best way possible, ready to sleep deep and do it all again tomorrow.
