Whisky Point vs. Peanut Farm: Which Sri Lanka Surf Spot is Best?

Whisky Point vs. Peanut Farm: Which Sri Lanka Surf Spot is Best?

While the advanced surfers flock to the fast, hollow sections of Arugam Bay's "Main Point", beginners and intermediates often find themselves choosing between two of the most famous, forgiving waves in the area: Whisky Point and Peanut Farm.

Both are situated just a short Tuk Tuk ride away from the main hub of Arugam Bay, but they offer distinctively different vibes and wave characteristics. Here is the ultimate local breakdown of these two arugam bay surf spots.

Whisky Point

Located about 15 minutes north of Arugam Bay in the village of Urani, Whisky Point is a famous, fat, rolling right-hand point break that breaks off a rocky outcrop.

The Wave

Whisky Point is a dream for beginners catching their very first green (unbroken) waves, and for longboarders looking to cross-step. The wave breaks relatively softly and crumbles slowly, giving you plenty of time to pop up and set your line. It picks up a lot of swell, so even when Main Point is small, Whisky Point is usually working.

The Vibe

It is heavily populated with surf schools and beginners. You will find a fun, social atmosphere in the water, but it can get quite crowded during the peak season.

Best For: First-timers, beginners, and longboarders.

Peanut Farm

Located about 20-30 minutes south of Arugam Bay, getting to Peanut Farm is half the adventure. You bounce along a dusty, bumpy dirt track through a pristine nature reserve, often spotting wild elephants, monkeys, and peacocks along the way.

The Wave

Peanut Farm features a beautiful stretch of sand that connects to a lagoon. It actually has two distinct takeoff zones (the "Main Point" of Peanut Farm and a secondary inside section). The waves here are typically a bit faster and wall up slightly more than Whisky Point, offering great sections for intermediate surfers to practice turns and cutbacks. The inside section is a sandy, safe haven for absolute beginners riding the white-water.

The Vibe

Wild, scenic, and rustic. There are fewer permanent structures here compared to Whisky Point, giving it a much more secluded, "surf trip" feel. The stunning natural backdrop makes it a favorite for ocean surf arugam bay photography.

Best For: All levels. Beginners can learn on the inside, while intermediates can score fun, rippable walls on the outside point.

The Verdict

You don't really have to choose—if you book an Edgeway Surf Camp, our ISA-certified instructors will take you to both spots depending on the daily wind, tide, and your personal progression!
