What to Wear Surfing in Sri Lanka: The Ultimate Packing Guide

Packing for a surf trip can be confusing, especially if it’s your first time. If you are heading to Sri Lanka—and specifically to the sun-drenched East Coast of Arugam Bay—you might be wondering: Do I need a wetsuit? What should I wear to protect myself from the sun?
The good news is that surfing in Sri Lanka requires very little gear. Here is your complete guide on exactly what to wear surfing in Sri Lanka.
The Water Temperature: Leave the Wetsuit at Home
First things first: You absolutely do not need a wetsuit in Sri Lanka.
The water temperature in Arugam Bay sits at a balmy, bathtub-warm 27°C to 29°C (80°F - 84°F) year-round. Wearing a neoprene wetsuit here will only result in severe overheating.
Instead of focusing on staying warm, your entire surf wardrobe in Sri Lanka should focus on one thing: Sun Protection.
The Essentials: What to Wear in the Water
1. Boardshorts or Surf Bikinis
For men, a good pair of stretchy, quick-drying boardshorts is all you need for your lower half. Make sure they sit securely on your waist—the impact of the waves can easily pull loose shorts down! For women, a secure, athletic surf bikini or a one-piece swimsuit is ideal. Avoid anything with heavy knots or metal clasps on the stomach, as you will be lying flat on your surfboard and these will dig into your ribs.
2. The Rash Guard (A Must-Have)
A long-sleeve rash guard (often called a "rashie") is the most important piece of clothing you will wear. It serves two vital purposes:
- Sun Protection: The Sri Lankan sun is intensely strong, especially during peak surf hours. A UPF 50+ rash guard will save your back and shoulders from severe sunburn.
- Board Rash Prevention: Soft-top surfboards have a textured, grippy deck that can rub your stomach raw after an hour of paddling.
Don't have a rash guard? Don't worry! If you book our Beginner Surf Lessons in Arugam Bay or join our Group Surf Lessons, we provide high-quality rash guards for you free of charge.
3. Zinc or Water-Resistant Sunscreen
While not technically "clothing," thick, reef-safe zinc oxide is something you must "wear" on your face. Standard sunscreen washes off in the saltwater within 15 minutes. Apply a thick layer of zinc to your nose, cheeks, and under your eyes.
Optional Gear: Do I Need Reef Booties?
This depends entirely on where you are surfing.
If you are a beginner taking a lesson at Peanut Farm or Whiskey Point, you do not need reef booties. These spots have soft, sandy bottoms that are perfectly safe for bare feet.
However, if you are an intermediate or advanced surfer heading out to Main Point, reef booties are highly recommended. Main Point breaks over a sharp, shallow live coral reef covered in sea urchins. A good pair of 2mm reef booties will save your feet from cuts.
Don't Overthink It!
Surfing in Sri Lanka is beautifully simple. Boardshorts, a rash guard, and plenty of sunscreen are all you really need.
If you are a total beginner, we make it even easier. When you book a lesson with Edgeway Surf School, all the technical gear is provided. You just bring your swimwear, and we handle the rest!
