What to Pack for a Surf Trip to Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay Surf Trip Packing List, Sri Lanka Surf Essentials, Boardshorts and Zinc Sunscreen, Tropical Surf Wax, Travel Guide

Packing for a tropical surf trip should be simple, but it is easy to overcomplicate things. Sri Lanka is a warm, humid environment, and life in Arugam Bay revolves entirely around the ocean, the jungle, and a relaxed beach culture.

If you are packing for the upcoming 2026 season, leave your thick wetsuits and fancy clothes at home. Here is exactly what you need to bring (and what you can leave behind) for your trip to A-Bay.

The Essentials: Wardrobe

The dress code in Arugam Bay is extremely casual. You will spend 90% of your time in swimwear and flip-flops.

  • 2 to 3 Pairs of High-Quality Boardshorts / Surf Bikinis: Ensure they have a secure drawstring and don't chafe, as you will be surfing in them without a wetsuit!
  • 1 Long-Sleeve Rash Guard: The Sri Lankan sun is intensely strong. A UPF 50+ rash guard is absolutely mandatory to prevent immediate sunburn during a 2-hour lesson.
  • Lightweight T-Shirts & Tank Tops: Cotton or linen breathe best in the humidity.
  • 1 Light Sweater or Hoodie: While the days are blazing hot, the evening breeze after surfing can occasionally feel surprisingly cool.

Need gear? Don't worry! When you book an all-inclusive Surf Camp Package with Edgeway Surf, we provide premium, clean rash guards for every single lesson.

Sun Protection and Health

  • Reef-Safe Zinc / Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Regular lotion washes off instantly in the ocean. You need thick, high-quality zinc for your face. (You can buy it in Arugam Bay, but bringing your favorite brand is usually better).
  • Basic First Aid Kit: Reef cuts happen. Bring a small kit with waterproof plasters, iodine/Betadine, and antibiotic ointment.
  • Mosquito Repellent: Crucial for the evenings and if you go on a jungle Tuk-Tuk safari!

The Big Question: Should You Bring Your Surfboard?

Airlines often charge exorbitant oversize baggage fees (sometimes over $150 each way!) to fly surfboards to Colombo. On top of that, traveling in a small car or bus across the island with a 7-foot board bag is incredibly stressful.

Unless you are an advanced surfer heavily attached to your custom shortboard, we HIGHLY advise leaving your board at home.

Rent High-Quality Boards in A-Bay Instead

At Edgeway Surf, we maintain a premium quiver of surfboards for all levels. Whether you need a highly buoyant 8-foot soft-top to catch your first wave, or a slick fiberglass funboard for carving at Peanut Farm, we have you covered.

Our boards are maintained daily by our Head Coach, Kiyas, ensuring you never paddle out on a waterlogged or damaged board.
