Surfing Main Point Arugam Bay: The Ultimate Local's Guide

If you have ever seen a drone photo of perfectly peeling right-hand lines wrapping endlessly around a sandy point in Sri Lanka, you were likely looking at Main Point, Arugam Bay.
Main Point is the undisputed crown jewel of the east coast. It is the wave that put Arugam Bay on the global surfing map, regularly hosting international competitions and attracting advanced surfers from every corner of the planet.
But surfing Main Point requires respect, skill, and a solid understanding of the break. Here is your ultimate guide to mastering it.
The Wave Setup
Main Point is a long, performance right-hander. It breaks off a coral and rock reef (which is often covered by sand during the peak season) and peels for up to 400 meters on a good day.
The wave typically features three sections:
- The Takeoff (The Peak): This is the steepest, fastest part of the wave. It requires a committed, quick pop-up. On solid 4-6 foot days, this section occasionally offers a quick, hollow barrel.
- The Wall (The Bowl): Once past the takeoff, the wave hits a shallow section of the reef, standing up perfectly for massive carves, cutbacks, and vertical snaps.
- The Inside (Baby Point): As the wave wraps around into the bay, it softens out entirely into a gentle peeling wave, which is where the beginners learn.
Want to level up your surfing? Main Point is not for beginners. If you are an intermediate surfer looking to transition from riding the foam to carving up the green face of Main Point, book an Intermediate Surf Package with Walith. With 8 years of coaching experience, he will safely guide you into the lineup and correct your technique.
When Does it Work Best?
Main Point really turns on during the peak season from May to September. It handles large South and South-East swells beautifully.
- Tide: Mid to high tide is generally safest, as the reef can become dangerously shallow at low tide.
- Wind: The offshore winds typically blow perfectly in the mornings, making the wave incredibly glassy and fast.
Crowd Control and Etiquette
Because it is the best wave in town, it is also the most crowded. The lineup at Main Point is highly competitive, populated by visiting pros, aggressive travelers, and the highly-skilled local crew.
The Golden Rules:
- Respect the Locals: A-Bay locals are incredibly friendly, but they own the peak. If a local is paddling for a set wave, give them the priority.
- Wait Your Turn: Don't paddle out and immediately snake your way to the peak. Sit patiently on the shoulder, catch wide sets, and slowly work your way into the rhythm of the break.
- Know Your Limits: If the sets look too heavy, don't force it. Head to Peanut Farm or Elephant Rock!
