When is the Best Arugam Bay Surfing Season?

When is the Best Arugam Bay Surfing Season?

If you are planning a trip to the tropical paradise of Sri Lanka to score world-class waves, timing is absolutely everything. Because Sri Lanka experiences two distinct monsoon seasons that hit opposite sides of the island at different times, you need to know exactly when to head East.

So, when is the Arugam Bay surf season? Let’s break it down.

The Peak Season: May to September

The absolute best time to visit Arugam Bay for surfing is between May and September.

During these months, the Southwest Monsoon is hitting the opposite side of the island (the South and West coasts, like Weligama and Hikkaduwa), leaving the East Coast completely dry, sunny, and most importantly, blessed with consistent offshore winds.

This is when the Roaring Forties (massive storms deep in the Southern Ocean) send long-period groundswells marching across the Indian Ocean, lighting up Arugam Bay’s famous right-hand point breaks.

What to Expect During Peak Season

  • Wave Size: 3ft to 6ft+ (perfect for intermediate to advanced surfers at Main Point, while nearby spots like Whisky Point remain great for beginners).
  • Weather: Dry, hot, and sunny. Expect daytime temperatures around 32°C (90°F).
  • Vibe: The town is bustling, restaurants are full, and the famous Arugam Bay nightlife is vibrant.

The Shoulder Seasons: April & October

If you want to beat the heavy crowds but still score fun, surfable waves, the "shoulder months" of April and October are fantastic options.

  • April: The season is just waking up. The swells start to become more consistent, and the water is glassy and beautiful before the peak season crowds arrive.
  • October: The swells start to taper off, and you may experience a few passing rain showers, but the waves are still largely uncrowded and very fun for logging and learning.

The Off-Season: November to March

From November through March, the Northeast Monsoon hits Arugam Bay. The wind turns onshore, making the ocean messy, choppy, and generally un-surfable. During these months, the entire Sri Lankan surf community migrates down to the South Coast (Ahangama, Weligama, Hiriketiya).

Do not plan a surf trip to Arugam Bay during the off-season.
