Private vs. Group Surf Lessons: Which is Better?

private vs group surf lessons

When you decide to finally book your first surf lesson in Arugam Bay, you will be faced with an immediate choice: Should you join a group lesson, or should you pay a little extra for a private 1-on-1 coach?

Both options have fantastic benefits, but they cater to very different types of travelers, learning styles, and budgets. If you are struggling to decide, here is our complete breakdown of private vs. group surf lessons to help you choose the perfect fit for your Sri Lankan holiday.

The Case for Group Surf Lessons

Group lessons are the most popular way to learn how to surf worldwide. They are highly social, energetic, and slightly more affordable.

The Pros:

  • The Social Aspect: If you are a solo backpacker traveling through Sri Lanka, group lessons are the absolute best way to make friends. You will be cheering each other on in the water, laughing when you wipe out, and almost certainly grabbing a beer together at a beach bar afterward.
  • Built-in Rest Time: Surfing is exhausting. When you are in a group, you have to wait your turn for the instructor to push you into a wave. This natural rotation gives your shoulders a much-needed break to recover.
  • Affordability: Group lessons are generally cheaper. At Edgeway Surf, our group rate is just $32 USD, making it incredibly budget-friendly.

The Cons:

  • Less Personalized Attention: You are sharing the instructor's eyes with other people. If you make a subtle mistake with your foot placement, it might take the coach a few waves to notice and correct it.
  • The Danger of "Mega-Groups": This is a huge warning! Many cheap surf schools cram 8 to 10 students with a single instructor. At Edgeway, we solve this by strictly capping our groups at a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

The Case for Private Surf Lessons

If you are serious about progressing your skills rapidly, nothing beats having a professional coach dedicated entirely to you.

The Pros:

  • Incredible Progression: In a private lesson, the instructor is hyper-focused on your specific biomechanics. They will instantly correct your stance, fix your paddle timing, and push you into 3x as many waves. You will learn in one private lesson what might take three group lessons to achieve.
  • Customized Pace: If you are a slow learner who is nervous about the ocean, the instructor will slow down and stay in shallow water. If you are a fast learner with good balance, they will immediately take you "out back" to catch bigger waves. The entire curriculum bends to your needs.
  • Insane Value in Sri Lanka: In Australia or Europe, a private surf lesson costs upwards of $150. In Arugam Bay, our private 1-on-1 lessons are just $35 USD. It is the best coaching value in the world.

The Cons:

  • It is Exhausting: Without other students taking turns, you will be paddling and catching waves non-stop for 90 minutes. You need decent physical fitness to maximize a private session!

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Group Lessons if: You are on a strict backpacker budget, you want to make friends, you are just looking for a fun "one-off" holiday experience, or you are traveling with a group of friends who want to learn together.

Choose Private Lessons if: You are serious about actually becoming a surfer, you want to progress to unbroken "green" waves as quickly as possible, or you are slightly nervous and want an instructor by your side 100% of the time.

Still can't decide? Many of our students book a mix! They start with a private lesson on Day 1 to nail the fundamentals, and then switch to group lessons for the rest of the week to enjoy the social vibes.
