Main Point Arugam Bay: Surfing the Crown Jewel

When surfers around the world close their eyes and dream of Sri Lanka, they are picturing Main Point.

Located right in the heart of town, Main Point is the absolute crown jewel of Arugam Bay. It is a world-class, right-hand point break that has hosted massive international surfing competitions, including Red Bull events and WSL qualifiers.

If you are an advanced surfer, this wave is the reason you booked your plane ticket. If you are a beginner, it is a wave you should admire from the beach. Here is everything you need to know about surfing Main Point in 2027.

The Wave Mechanics

Main Point breaks directly off a rocky headland and peels fast and hollow over a live coral reef. When a solid South or Southeast swell wraps around the point, the wave can offer rides of up to 400 meters (1,300 feet).

The wave is generally broken down into three sections:

  1. The Takeoff (The Bowl): This is the steepest and fastest part of the wave. On a good day, the takeoff throws a clean, makeable barrel section right off the bat.
  2. The Wall: After the initial bowl, the wave slows down slightly, offering a long, vertical wall perfect for massive carving turns, cutbacks, and top-to-bottom surfing.
  3. The Inside Reef (The Surgeon's Table): The wave speeds up again as it hits a very shallow, jagged section of reef on the inside. This section is notoriously dangerous—if you fall here on a low tide, you will leave some skin on the reef.

Advanced Surfers Only

Let’s be incredibly clear: Main Point is not a beginner wave.

The combination of a fast-breaking wave, a shallow reef, and a highly competitive, crowded lineup makes it a dangerous place for novices. If you are still learning the basics, you will put yourself and others at risk by paddling out here.

Instead, beginners should head to the much softer, sandy-bottom waves like Peanut Farm or Elephant Rock. (Check out our guide to the Top 3 Beginner Spots for more info).

The Lineup Etiquette

Because it is a world-class wave, Main Point attracts a world-class crowd. The lineup is heavily dominated by highly skilled local Sri Lankan surfers and traveling international pros.

  • Respect the Locals: The local crew in Arugam Bay are incredibly welcoming, but they rightfully command the peak. Give them respect, don't paddle around them, and wait your turn.
  • No Snaking or Dropping In: If someone is deeper on the peak, the wave is theirs. Dropping in at Main Point is a recipe for a bad collision over a shallow reef.

Best Time and Conditions

Main Point turns on during the peak dry season, specifically from June to August. It handles large swells very well (up to 8 feet), and works best on a mid-to-high tide (which covers the sharpest parts of the reef). The morning offshore winds (from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM) keep the face of the wave perfectly glassy before the afternoon onshore winds arrive.
