The Ultimate 7-Day Arugam Bay Itinerary (Surf, Safari & Chill)

7 day arugam bay itinerary

So, you have carved out exactly one week for your trip to the East Coast of Sri Lanka. Arugam Bay is famous for its world-class waves, but the surrounding area is packed with ancient temples, incredible wildlife, and vibrant local culture.

If you want to experience the absolute best of the region without feeling rushed, you need a solid plan.

Whether you are joining a structured Surf Camp or traveling independently, here is the ultimate 7-day Arugam Bay itinerary that perfectly balances action, adventure, and relaxation.

Day 1: Arrival & Exploring the Town

After a long drive from Colombo or the hill country, your first day should be all about settling into the East Coast rhythm.

  • Morning: Check into your guesthouse and grab a hearty Sri Lankan breakfast of egg hoppers and sambol.
  • Afternoon: Take a walk down the main street. Arugam Bay consists of one long, sandy road lined with surf shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is incredibly walkable and easy to navigate.
  • Sunset: Head down to Main Point. Grab a fresh coconut, sit on the sand, and watch the advanced surfers tackle the reef break as the sun goes down.

Day 2: Your First Surf Lesson at Peanut Farm

You can’t come to Arugam Bay without getting in the water! It is time to catch your first wave.

  • Morning: Head to a local surf school (like Edgeway Surf) and get fitted for a beginner soft-top board. Jump in a tuk-tuk and head 15 minutes south to Peanut Farm. This is one of the best beginner surf spots in Arugam Bay because of its soft sandy bottom and gentle waves.
  • Afternoon: You will be exhausted after 90 minutes of paddling. Spend the afternoon relaxing in a hammock or grabbing a smoothie bowl at a beachfront cafe.
  • Evening: Treat yourself to a massive Sri Lankan rice and curry buffet at a local family-run restaurant.

Day 3: Progressing Your Surf Skills & Ancient Temples

Now that you have the surfing bug, it is time to build your muscle memory.

  • Morning: Book a second surf lesson. Today, your instructor will focus on fixing your stance and helping you catch unbroken "green" waves.
  • Afternoon: Hire a tuk-tuk to visit the Muhudu Maha Viharaya. This ancient Buddhist temple is located right on the sand dunes of Pottuvil. It is incredibly peaceful and offers a unique glimpse into Sri Lanka's deep history.
  • Evening: Enjoy some fresh, wood-fired pizza in town and check out the local live music scene.

Day 4: Rest Day & The Kumana Safari

Your paddling muscles (shoulders and triceps) are going to be screaming by day four. Take a break from the ocean and explore the jungle.

  • Morning: Sleep in! Enjoy a slow morning with excellent local coffee.
  • Afternoon (1:00 PM): Book a half-day jeep safari to Kumana National Park. Located about an hour south of Arugam Bay, Kumana is famous for its massive flocks of migratory birds, wild elephants, crocodiles, and if you are lucky, the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. The afternoon safaris offer the best lighting for photography and a higher chance of seeing animals gathering at the waterholes.

Day 5: The Whiskey Point Vibe

With your arms fully rested, it is time to explore the waves north of town.

  • Morning: Take a 20-minute tuk-tuk ride north to Whiskey Point. This is an incredibly fun, peeling wave that is perfect for beginners and intermediate longboarders. The lineup is super friendly, and the wave is forgiving.
  • Afternoon: Stay at Whiskey Point! There is a fantastic beach bar right on the sand where you can relax, eat a burger, and watch the other surfers for the rest of the day.

Day 6: Sunset at Elephant Rock

Make your final full day on the East Coast count.

  • Morning: One final surf session! By day six, you should be comfortably popping up and riding waves all the way to the beach.
  • Late Afternoon: Take a tuk-tuk south to Elephant Rock. This is one of the most rugged and beautiful bays in the area. While the wave here is fickle, the massive rock formation on the edge of the bay is the main attraction. Hike to the top of the boulder (be careful, it can be steep!) for the most breathtaking, panoramic sunset view on the entire East Coast.

Day 7: One Last Dip & Departure

  • Morning: Wake up early for a sunrise swim in the warm Indian Ocean. Pack your bags, enjoy one last local breakfast, and organize your taxi for the journey to your next destination.
