What to Expect During Your First Surf Lesson in Arugam Bay

Booking your very first Surf Lessons in Arugam Bay is exciting, but it’s completely normal to feel a little bit nervous. If you’ve never touched a surfboard before, you might be wondering exactly what happens when you turn up at the beach.

To help put your mind at ease and get you hyped for the water, here is a step-by-step breakdown of exactly what to expect during your first surf lesson in Sri Lanka.

1. Meeting Your Instructor and Getting Geared Up

When you arrive at the surf school or meet at the beach, you’ll be introduced to your instructor. If you opted for Private Surf Lessons, it will just be you and the coach. If you booked Group Surf Lessons, you'll meet the other beginners in your class.

Your instructor will hand you a rash guard (a tight shirt that protects your skin from the sun and the wax on the board) and help you select the right Surfboard Rental. For your first day, this will always be a large, thick foam board (known as a "soft top" or "foamie"). These boards are incredibly buoyant and stable, making it as easy as possible to stand up.

2. Beach Theory (15-20 Minutes)

You won't jump straight into the ocean. First, you need to learn the basics on dry land.

Your instructor will draw a surfboard in the sand or place your foamie on the beach. During this crucial time, you will learn:

  • Safety Basics: How to fall safely (always cover your head!), how to handle the board in the water, and basic ocean awareness.
  • Paddling Technique: How to position your body on the board and paddle efficiently.
  • The "Pop-Up": The most important part! This is the technique used to transition from lying down to standing up on the board. You will practice this movement multiple times on the sand until muscle memory starts to kick in.

3. Entering the Water

Once you have the theory down, it’s time to get wet. You will attach the leash to your back ankle and walk your board into the water.

In Arugam Bay, beginner spots have soft, sandy bottoms. You will walk out until the water is about waist or chest deep. You don't need to paddle out into the deep ocean on your first day!

4. Catching the Whitewater

Your instructor will turn your board toward the beach and hold onto the tail. When a gentle, broken wave (the whitewash) approaches, they will tell you to start paddling. As the wave catches the board, the instructor will give you a firm push and yell, "UP!"

This is your cue to execute the pop-up you practiced on the beach. Because the instructor is handling the timing and wave selection, all you have to focus on is jumping to your feet.

Expect to fall a lot in the beginning! It is part of the fun. The warm water makes falling completely painless.

5. Taking It Further: Surf Camps

If you realize that you love the feeling of gliding on the water (and trust us, you will), a single lesson might not be enough. Many beginners choose to upgrade to a comprehensive Surf Camp experience, which includes daily lessons that build on these initial skills.

Alternatively, you can look into bespoke Surf Packages or Surf & Stay Packages that combine your accommodation with ongoing surf tuition.

Make it Memorable

Your first time standing on a surfboard is a milestone you will want to remember forever. Ask your surf school about adding Surf Photography to your lesson so a professional can capture that magical first ride.

And don't forget—if you're flying into Sri Lanka and heading straight to the waves, booking an Airport Transfer ahead of time ensures you arrive fresh and ready for your first lesson!
