Surf Lesson Safety Tips: What Every Beginner in Sri Lanka Should Know

Arugam Bay is widely regarded as one of the best and safest places in the world to learn how to surf. The warm water, sandy bottoms, and predictable waves make it a beginner's paradise. However, the ocean is a dynamic environment, and safety should always be your number one priority.

Before you book your Arugam Bay surf lessons, familiarize yourself with these essential safety tips to ensure your experience is memorable for all the right reasons.

1. Always Use a Soft-Top (Foam) Surfboard

For your first few lessons, you should never use a hard fiberglass surfboard. Soft-top boards (often called foamies) are buoyant, highly stable, and, most importantly, soft. If the board hits you during a wipeout, it acts like a giant cushion. All reputable surf schools in Arugam Bay strictly use soft-tops for beginners.

2. Learn How to Fall Safely

Falling off your board is guaranteed. The trick is knowing how to fall.

  • Never dive head-first. Always fall flat, like a starfish.
  • Always cover your head with your arms as you come up to the surface. This protects you in case your board is flying back toward you.
  • Fall backwards or sideways into the wave, rather than throwing yourself forward into shallow water.

3. Understand Rip Currents

Rip currents are narrow channels of fast-moving water that pull away from the shore. If you ever find yourself caught in one, do not panic and do not paddle straight back against it. Let the current take you out past the breaking waves, or paddle parallel to the shore until you are out of the pull. In a Private Surf Lesson, your instructor will constantly monitor your position to keep you away from strong rips.

4. Protect Yourself from the Tropical Sun

The Sri Lankan sun is no joke, especially during the peak Arugam Bay season from May to September.

  • Apply high-SPF zinc sunscreen to your face (especially nose and cheeks) at least 20 minutes before entering the water.
  • Wear a UV-protective rash guard.
  • If possible, book morning or evening surf lessons to avoid the intense midday UV rays.

5. Listen to Your Instructor

Your local instructor understands the specific break, the tides, and the currents better than anyone. If they tell you to move down the beach, do it. If they say the waves are too big for your skill level that day, trust their judgment.
