Packing List for Indian Travelers: What to Bring to Arugam Bay
Packing for a trip from India to Sri Lanka might seem straightforward—after all, the weather is very similar! However, if you are heading to the East Coast to take Surf Lessons in Arugam Bay, there are a few highly specific items you need to ensure a comfortable trip.
Here is the ultimate packing list for Indian tourists heading to the Sri Lankan surf.
1. Important Documents & Finance
Before you pack your boardshorts, make sure the administrative side is handled!
- Passport & ETA: Your passport must have 6 months of validity. Print out your free Sri Lanka ETA approval!
- Currency: Indian Rupees (INR) are not widely accepted in Sri Lanka. You need Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR). The best method is to carry a Zero Forex-Markup debit card (like Niyo Global or Fi) and withdraw LKR from ATMs in Colombo or Arugam Bay.
- Insurance: Make sure your travel insurance explicitly covers "surfing."
2. Surf-Specific Gear
Even if you book comprehensive Surf & Stay Packages that include Surfboard Rental, you need to bring your own personal apparel.
- High-Quality Rash Guard: Do not surf in a cotton t-shirt! Bring a tight-fitting, UV-rated rash guard to prevent severe chafing from the surfboard wax.
- Boardshorts / Surf Bikinis: Ensure your swimwear has a strong drawstring. The whitewash during Beginner Surf Lessons is powerful and will easily rip off loose clothing!
- Zinc Surf Sunscreen: Standard Indian sunscreen will wash off in 30 seconds. Buy thick, water-resistant Zinc paste for your face.
3. Tropical Clothing
Arugam Bay in August is hot (around 32°C). The vibe is incredibly relaxed and barefoot.
- Lightweight Cottons & Linens: Pack breathable fabrics. Leave the heavy denim jeans at home!
- Modest Transit Wear: While bikinis are fine on Arugam Bay beach, you should wear modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) during your Airport Taxi from Colombo and when visiting any temples.
- Flip Flops: You will rarely wear shoes. A good pair of sandals is all you need.
4. Tech & Extras
- Universal Adapter: Sri Lanka primarily uses the UK-style Type G plug (three rectangular pins). Your standard Indian two-pin plugs will not fit without an adapter!
- Mosquito Repellent: Essential for evening dinners on the beach.
- Dry Bag: A 5L or 10L waterproof dry bag is perfect for keeping your phone and wallet safe on the beach while you are taking Group Surf Lessons.
If you forget anything, don't panic! Arugam Bay has plenty of surf shops where you can buy wax, zinc, and rash guards. Pack light, secure your ETA, and get ready for an epic Sri Lankan adventure!
