East Coast vs. South Coast: Where to Surf in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is uniquely blessed as a surfing destination. Because of its teardrop shape and position in the Indian Ocean, it captures massive swells year-round. However, the island experiences two distinct monsoon seasons, meaning the "good" surf completely flips from one side of the island to the other depending on the month.
If you are planning your trip, you will inevitably face the big question: Should I surf the East Coast or the South Coast?
The East Coast (Arugam Bay)
The East Coast is synonymous with one legendary town: Arugam Bay.
The Season
The arugam bay surfing season runs from May through October. During this time, the Southwest monsoon brings rain and onshore winds to the rest of the island, leaving the East Coast dry, sunny, and blessed with perfect offshore conditions.
The Waves
Arugam Bay is all about point breaks. Instead of surfing shifting beach breaks, you surf long, perfectly peeling right-hand waves that break off rocks and sandbars. Notable spots include:
- Main Point: Fast, hollow, and intense.
- Whisky Point & Peanut Farm: Forgiving, fun, and perfect for beginners to intermediates.
The Vibe
Arugam Bay is a dense, bustling surf town. Everything is clustered along one single dirt road running parallel to the beach. It has a slightly more "wild" and adventurous feel because it borders the Kumana National Park, meaning you will frequently see wild elephants and crocodiles crossing the road.
The South Coast (Weligama & Ahangama)
The South Coast is a long, sprawling stretch of coastline dotted with dozens of different surf towns.
The Season
The best time to surf the South Coast is from November through April.
The Waves
The South Coast offers a mix of everything, but is most famous for its massive beach breaks (like Weligama) and deep reef breaks (like Midigama and Kabalana). Beach breaks are generally great for absolute beginners learning the basics in the white-water, but the rides are often shorter than East Coast point breaks.
The Vibe
The South Coast is heavily developed. The towns are spread out across a busy main highway. It boasts incredible cafes, massive parties, and stunning beach clubs. However, it can feel a bit chaotic compared to the localized, tight-knit community feel of Arugam Bay.
The Verdict
Your decision should be based entirely on when you are traveling:
- Traveling between May and October? Head straight to an Arugam Bay surf camp.
- Traveling between November and April? Head to the South Coast.
