Beginner's Guide to Learning to Surf in Arugam Bay

Beginner's Guide to Learning to Surf in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is famous for its fast, peeling right-hand points that attract professional free-surfers from around the globe. But did you know it is also one of the absolute best places in the world to catch your very first wave?

If you are looking for an incredible beginner surf camp in Sri Lanka, this beautiful stretch of the East Coast should be at the top of your list. Here is our ultimate beginner’s guide to learning to surf in Arugam Bay.

Why Arugam Bay is Perfect for Beginners

The main reason Arugam Bay is ideal for learning is that the massive Indian Ocean groundswells wrap around the headlands and points. By the time the waves reach the inside bays (like the inside section of Peanut Farm or the rolling reform at Whisky Point), the power of the ocean has dissipated, leaving gentle, predictable, waist-high rolling white-water.

Furthermore, the water is a balmy 28°C (82°F) year-round. You do not need a wetsuit; just a rash guard and boardshorts or a swimsuit.

The Best Beginner Surf Spots

When you book a lesson with an arugam bay surf school, your instructor will take you to safe, sandy-bottomed spots or deeply forgiving point breaks.

  1. Whisky Point: Famous for longboarding, the inside section offers beautiful, crumbling white-water that is slow and easy to catch.
  2. Peanut Farm (Inside): A stunning, sandy bay. You learn on the inside white-water while occasionally catching a glimpse of wild elephants in the nearby jungle!
  3. Elephant Rock (Inside): Another highly scenic, gentle spot that breaks softly over a deep sandbank.

Note: As a beginner, you generally will not be surfing "Main Point." Leave the reef and the massive crowds to the advanced surfers until you progress!

What to Expect in Your First Lesson

When you book with Edgeway Surf, your first lesson is all about building a foundation of safety and technique.

  1. Beach Theory (15-20 minutes): Before you touch the water, your ISA-certified instructor will teach you ocean safety, how to handle the board, and the mechanics of the "pop-up."
  2. The White-Water: You will start in waist-deep water. The instructor will hold your board and push you into gentle, broken waves so you can practice popping up without worrying about timing the wave yourself.
  3. Catching Your First Green Wave: After a few lessons (or sometimes on day 1 if you are naturally athletic!), the instructor will take you further out to catch your first "green" (unbroken) wave.

What Should You Bring?

  • High-SPF, Zinc-based Sunscreen: The tropical sun is intense. Regular sunscreen washes off instantly; you need thick, reef-safe zinc for your face.
  • A Rash Guard: Most good surf schools (including ours) provide this, but having your own is nice for UV protection.
  • Water & Energy: Surfing is exhausting. Drink plenty of water before padding out.
